What is Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) Insurance?

Cancel For Any Reason coverage is a travel insurance benefit that allows you to get partially reimbursed for cancelling a trip for a reason not otherwise covered under your plan. You can quite literally cancel a trip for any reason, and still get some of your money back. IMG’s iTravelInsured Travel LX plan offers Cancel For Any Reason as an optional add-on benefit.

What’s the difference between Trip Cancellation benefits & Cancel For Any Reason benefits?

The two key differences are how much you get reimbursed and the covered reasons that apply to each benefit.

Trip Cancellation benefits are usually included on most travel protection plans, but Cancel For Any Reason coverage is often an optional add-on benefit for an additional cost. Trip Cancellation benefits reimburse you up to 100% of your insured trip cost, but only if certain covered reasons cause the cancellation. Cancel For Any Reason benefits reimburse you a portion of your trip cost, but the benefit applies no matter the reason for cancellation.

The following situations are examples of common covered reasons that standard Trip Cancellation benefits may cover:

  • Illness
  • Hurricanes & other natural disasters
  • Job loss or involuntary job relocation
  • Complications of Pregnancy
  • Death of your family member or traveling companion

Please note that the above listed perils are subject to further restrictions and additional terms apply. Refer to the plan document, which is sent upon purchase, for complete details.

Why get Cancel For Any Reason Insurance?

Nobody wants to cancel a trip, but unfortunately life happens. There are many reasons why you may have to call off a trip, and standard Trip Cancellation benefits do not cover all of them. Adding Cancel For Any Reason coverage gives you peace of mind knowing if you do have to make the tough choice and cancel a trip, you can get some of your hard-earned money reimbursed.

Here are some scenarios that can be covered by Cancel For Any Reason benefits, but not standard Trip Cancellation benefits:

  • Worry or fear over travel because of COVID-19 or other safety concerns
  • You change your mind about going on the trip completely and would rather stay home
  • Unexpected family situation
  • Moving or starting a new job the week you were supposed to travel
  • You and your traveling companion no longer want to travel together

How much does it cost?

Cancel For Any Reason coverage comes at an additional cost to your travel protection plan. Adding CFAR typically increases your plan cost by about 50%.
