Cambridge is one of the most American cities in the UK (2024)

Americans are celebrating Independence Day today (July 4) but thousands have settled back in the original mother country.

Cambridge is one of the most American cities in Britain with 2,284 people living in the city born in the United States, according to the last Census in 2011. This figure was 1.8 per cent of the population, or one in 54 people in the city.

East Cambridgeshire saw an even higher proportion of Americans at 2 per cent of the population, or 1,658 people.

The only other spot in England or Wales with a greater influx of Americans was Forest Heath in Suffolk thanks to its two US Air Force bases at RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall.

On July 4, 1776, the 13 American colonies declared independence from the British during the Revolutionary War.

Americans living in The States have the day off work to don their American flag apparel, fire up the barbecue and enjoy parades and fireworks.

Population born in the US:

  • Cambridge: 2,284
  • East Cambridgeshire: 1,658
  • Fenland: 208
  • Huntingdonshire: 2,542
  • Peterborough: 541
  • South Cambridgeshire: 981
  • Cambridgeshire: 8,214
