What does business insurance cover?

Business insurance can help pay for the cost to repair or replace property, legal fees, lost income, and other covered losses. The term “business insurance” is actually a blanket term that can refer to one or multiple coverages included in a business insurance policy. Some of the most popular types of business insurance policies include a commercial package policy and a business owners policy (BOP).

Commercial Package policy vs. Business Owners Policy (BOP)

What’s the difference between a commercial package policy and a business owners policy? Well, think of a Commercial Package Policy as a stereo system where each component is purchased individually. You would buy the receiver, speakers, remote, and every other part and accessory separate from each other.

In contrast, a BOP policy is much like a stereo-in-a-box. All of the insurance pieces you need come pre-packaged.

Which business coverages do I need?

While every business is unique, almost every business owner is going to want to make sure they at least have General Liability coverage. This popular coverage serves as the basis for most business policies and provides protection against unexpected events that include third party injuries or property damage.

Additional insurance products and coverages your business may need include business property, professional liability insurance (for errors and omissions), business umbrella policies, builders risk insurance, equipment floater insurance, employment practices liability insurance (EPLI), cyber liability, pollution liability, liquor liability, inland marine coverage and more!

Is business insurance required?

Business insurance requirements are different for each type of business and can also vary widely from state to state. If your business has employees or business-owned vehicles, your business insurance policy will need to include Workers Compensation as well as Commercial Auto Insurance. In Washington state, Workers Compensation is required for businesses with one or more employees. Washington state law also requires business-owned vehicles to have liability limits of 25/50/10 at a minimum. This means $25,000 of bodily injury liability per person, $50,000 of bodily injury liability per accident, and $10,000 of property damage liability per accident.
