From pitch-perfect redesigns to remarkable character debuts, these areBrick Fanatics’ top 10 LEGO minifigures that arrived in 2022.

It’s safe to say the LEGO Group has stepped up its game once again across 2022, at least as far as its tiny plastic people are concerned, with countless brilliant LEGO minifigures finding their way into our collections over the past 12 months. Whether through licensed themes, Collectible Minifigures series or simply in polybags, here areBrick Fanatics’ favourites from the year just gone.

This list has been compiled with input from across the Brick Fanatics writing staff.

10 – Blue Milk Luke

We’ve received a number of unique minifigure releases over the years included with many of TT Games’ smash-hit LEGO video game titles. 2022 was no exception, as the Deluxe Edition of LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga featured a bonus Luke Skywalker with Blue Milk that soon sold for big bucks on the secondary market.

Sure, we’ve seen numerous versions of the Tatooine farm boy, but this winking head design (complete with blue milk moustache) perfectly complements the tongue-in-cheek humour of the game itself. Throw in a Bantha milk-branded carton and the polybag’s relative scarcity, and what’s not to like?

9 – Mighty Thor (Jane Foster)

The LEGO Group’s simple design aesthetic necessitates a few compromises – as its take on the Flintstones made clear a few years ago. However, the first Jane Foster minifigure represents a distinct departure from that idea, with phenomenal detailing across the torso and legs.

Jane’s helmet is naturally the most attractive element, featuring an elegant sculpted design, copper printing and – best of all – a nose. Considering the movie version was at least partially CGI, this could be one of the best physical versions we’ll ever get.

8 – Football player (with vitiligo)

There are several reasons why we love this minifigure. Not only is it an important step for diversity, sparking positive comments from people with vitiligo online, but it’s also just a seriously cool minifigure design.

The fact that it showed up in a set designed to allow LEGO builders to create custom minifigures (21337 Table Football) that better represent themselves solidifies it as a design that has perfectly balanced both substance and style – and it’s one that’s already being followed up in 2023.

7 – Marty McFly

The LEGO Group’s return to Back to the Future with 10300 Back to the Future Time Machine was joined by two new minifigures with Marty and Doc Brown in their 2015 outfits. Marty’s updated minifigure is a particular highlight thanks to the presence of the futuristic self-lacing shoes.

This minifigure footwear is intricately printed across the front, sides, and feet tips of the standard LEGO minifigure legs, offering a rare level of detail, even for those in the most expensive LEGO sets. We’d advise considering this minifigure’s quality before you need a time machine to get it.

6 – Dwight Schrute

While the American reboot of The Office has its share of colourful characters, eccentric busybody Dwight remains one of its most memorable. The LEGO Group’s interpretation of him is a pitch-perfect translation of him to LEGO form – and is even more impressive when you consider it uses an off-the-rack hair element.

Featuring his classic mustard suit and front hair parting, Dwight’s sullen default expression is delightfully rendered for the LEGO universe. Crucially, though, he also comes with a smile – capturing either his devious side or his softer side, depending on your perspective.

5 – The Mandalorian

75331 The Razor Crest saw a welcome update to the Mandalorian’s minifigure, giving him a hairpiece for those rare moments that he’s without a helmet. Even when Din Djarin is sticking to the Creed, his helmet also got more detail through a new print, plus his dark grey arms got extra printing to extend his armoured appearance.

The changes are small, but it makes for an overall more detailed look that perfectly matches the attention to detail given to the entire build – and adds to the appeal of the latest LEGO Star Wars Ultimate Collector Series set.

4 – Kermit the Frog

Arguably Jim Henson’s greatest creation (and a reflection of the man himself), Kermit the Frog was perfectly interpreted in minifigure form as part of 71033 The Muppets. The LEGO Collectible Minifigures series includes 12 iconic Henson characters, with each minifigure managing to successfully capture the look, humour and essence of their original source material.

With his trademark banjo and rainbow (connection) accessory, Kermit the Frog may find it’s not easy being green, but this minifigure stands out as the collection’s must-have character.

3 – C-3PO

We’ve waited more than two decades for the ultimate LEGO C-3PO minifigure, but more specifically we’ve been waiting since the introduction of dual-moulded legs for the LEGO Group to capitalise on their potential for the protocol droid. That all finally came to pass in this year’s 75341 Luke Skywalker’s Landspeeder, which includes the most detailed Threepio minifigure to date.

Beyond just the low-hanging fruit of his single dual-moulded silver leg (which is still brilliantly-realised), C-3PO also includes prints across his arms, legs (as well as the sides of his legs) and his toes. It’s a character we’ve seen plenty of times before – too many to count – but this is proper protocol perfection.

2 – Vincent van Gogh

It’sbeena momentous yearfor LEGO Ideas with several massive and unique models, including 21333 Vincent van Gogh – The Starry Night – andit’sthe exclusive minifigure in that set that takes the second spot on this list.

The only official recreation of Vincent van Gogh is no normal minifigure, using the same brush stroke style as the iconic painting. It both blends in nicely with the build and stands apart from every other minifigure, thanks to its unique but thoughtful design.

1 – Aloy

Who could have predicted that not only would 2022 bring us a LEGO set based on Guerrilla Games’ Horizon franchise, but that it would also contain the year’s very best minifigure? Aloy is the surprise hit of a surprise set for 2022, coming exclusively in the attractively-priced 76989 Horizon Forbidden West: Tallneck.

Boasting detailed printing, a unique hairpiece (complete with her Focus, used in-game to scan the environment and detect weaknesses in her machine foes) and even carrying a newly-recoloured bow element, the Nora warrior is the epitome of LEGO minifigure design in 2022 – and the fact she’s come from beyond the confines of Star Wars and Super Heroes is all the more impressive.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
