What to Wear at Your Internship

It can be difficult to know what to pack for a two-week holiday, let alone three months in a new country in which you will intern. In the UK, there are different names for clothing. Sneakers are called "trainers," and pants are "trousers." One big tip, don't make the mistake of calling trousers, pants. There will be laughter. (Pants are underwear.)

To help you get an understanding of what you need to pack for your internship we have put together a run-down of the different dress codes your placement may ask for.

formal BUSINESS ATTIRE

INDUSTRIES: FINANCE, LAW, BUSINESS dress code
  • A smart pair of trousers and a blouse with closed, black or brown leather shoes.
  • A smart dress or skirt with a smart jacket to finish off the look.
  • Many workers often wear a full suit in these industries.
  • You may be able to wear smart trousers, a buttoned-down shirt, and a smart pair of shoes.
  • If you are opting for the tailored look, on your first day it is a good idea to wear a tie, as it makes a good impression. You can always take it off if you feel over-dressed.

BUSINESS CASUAL

INDUSTRIES: MARKETING, PR, JOURNALISM dress code

This is slightly more casual than your formal business attire above, but be careful not to go too casual on your first day.

  • A blouse and a pair of smart jeans can be the correct balance.
  • When opting for a skirt or dress, then you can wear more patterned materials compared with business attire.
  • Your shoes can also be a little less formal.
  • For interns opting for a tailored look, the main difference from formal business attire is that you won't have to wear a suit.
  • A shirt and a good pair of jeans or chinos will be ok.
  • You should still be wearing a pair of closed-toe shoes, but they don't have to be black or brown leather.

CASUAL WORKWEAR

INDUSTRIES: FILM AND TV, NGO'S, ARTS DRESS CODE

This is slightly more casual than your business casual attire above, but be careful not to go too casual on your first day.

  • "Casual" can refer to a good pair of jeans and a good-quality, plain t-shirt or pullover shirt or blouse.
  • You maybe able to wear trainers (not sneakers, remember).
  • Don't forget you are still in a work environment, so avoid any "fashionably" ripped clothing, and stay well away from any flip-flops/sandals/slides.

There are exceptions to the guidelines above. if you are uncertain, then please get in touch the Internship Team. They will also be in touch if you need any specific clothing for your placement.
