Billed as 'the largest billionaire bunker in the world', The Oppidumisa shelter concept planned forthe Czech countryside by the eponymous Swiss firm Oppidum.

When –or if –it's completed, it's said that the complex will sprawl over 323,000 square feet and consistof a cavernous underground shelter witha ground-levelgolf course, helipad and automated defence technology.

Plans for the lavish development involve the ambitious conversion of an existing military bunker on the site.

The historic complex was built by the Czech government andthe Soviets in 1984 at the height of the Cold War. Itcan withstand everything from a nuclear attack to a natural disaster, making it the ideal candidate for the luxury, disaster-proof project.

Real estate entrepreneur Jakub Zamrazil acquired the bunker in 2013 and set about designingone of the world's most luxuriousunderground shelters, capable ofkeeping its occupants safe and in the lifestyle to which they are accustomed for up to10 years.

The subterranean complex willfeaturea large 6,750-square-foot master apartment, six 1,720-square-foot suites and plenty of premium facilities and amenities.

Living spaces in The Oppidum will rival the world's finest five-star hotel suites with high-end furnishings and cutting-edge entertainment facilities.

Best of all, the living rooms and bedrooms will reportedly feature virtual window panels that give the illusion of being in the outside world.

The plans also include a conference and communications room, hospital and dental surgery within the facility.

Designed for just one buyer, the bunker will ultimately be made to fitthe specifications of its billionaire owner. It's not clear if the shelter has become a reality yet, or if it ever will –The Guardianhas claimed the plans areno more than a "CGI pipe dream", or perhaps the project is simply being kept under wraps.

Oppidum has since expanded its catalogue to offer a range of ultra-luxury designs for its discerning clientele to choose from. L'Heritage is an extremely opulent underground option for an end-of-world escape. The 10,760-square-foot design descends 49 feet below ground and is built to NATO-standard ballistic and blast protection levels, using the same formulation of high-density concrete used to build nuclear power plants.

Oppidum founder Jakub Zamrazil says that "an Oppidum provides peace of mind" in an "uncertain world". We should hope so, given that the starting price for L'Heritage is $60 million(£47.3m), increasing to around$100 million (£79m) when you add in luxury extras, such as staff quarters.

Once you've navigated your custom-designed garage, you pass through an airlocked decontamination zoneset between two blast doors, the first of which is controlled by a multi-biometric reader, which uses not only facial scanning but also iris- and palm-recognition technology.

Inside the sanctuary, you're greeted by an impressive entrance hall, which leads to a luxurious lounge, as well as a fully secured space for confidential discussions so that business can continue no matter thecirc*mstances above ground.

A discreetly concealed button turnsopaque walls transparent, revealing anunderground garden and the adjoining art gallery (pictured). Constructed to the same anti-intrusion standards as commercial bank vaults, the gallery boasts top-of-the-line fire protection, ventilation, temperature and humidity control systems to keep everything in perfect condition.

The L'Heritage model is designed so that the private living quarters, which includethe lounge and all thebedrooms, aresecurely separated from the more public sections of the bunker, enabling residents to safely separate business and family life when inhabiting the bunker full-time.

According to Oppidum’s website, the bunker’s living quarters can be designed to accommodate as many guests as the buyer requires.

Another special feature of L'Heritageis the remarkableinner garden, in which a range of flowers, plants and trees flourish year-round, courtesy of a sophisticated automatic irrigation system. Overhead, a skylight provides full light spectrum simulation, including sunrises, sunsets and changes in season.

Elsewhere, L'Heritage includes a swimming pool worthy of a film set, which can be filled with either fresh or saltwater, a fitness room and aplush home theatre equipped with a projection screenand a host of live feed options to keep boredom at bay. When the house was originally listed back in 2020, it was billed as a "pandemic refuge"and we can certainly see why.

Outside, the property and its grounds are guarded by concrete walls and electric entrance gates. Privacy was of the utmost importance to the British government when the bunker was constructed, as well as to the home's most recent owner.

Aimed at the less price-conscious among us, the condos start at $1.5 million (£1.2m) for a 900-square-foot space covering half a floor, increasingto $3 million (£2.4m) for a full-floor condo suite that can accommodate six to ten people.

There's also a penthouse option starting from $4.5 million (£3.6m), which boasts 3,600 square feet of space across two levels,should you really want to see out the end of the world in style.
