Billionaire Pham Nhat Vuong and the largest private group

Vuong and his wife Pham Thu Huong own enterprises which have been leading legal entities in their fields in the last decade. Vingroup is the largest Vietnamese private corporation, with capitalization value having reached VND400 trillion, or $17 billion. at times.

Currently, its capitalization value is VND200 trillion ($8.5 billion).

Vuong has been the first dollar billionaire and the richest businessman in the Vietnamese stock market for the last 10 years, since 2013, according to Forbes. His wife is the second wealthiest businesswoman.

He and his family also manage many other multi-billion-dollar businesses, including Vinhomes (VHM), the largest real estate developer, with capitalization value of VND 220 trillion ($9.3 billion) as of April 18, and VinFast, the only electric automobile manufacturer in Vietnam planning to enter the US market and list shares on the world’s largest bourse.

Most of their subsidiaries are leading in their fields and members of the family hold key positions in the companies.

Vinhomes is the largest real estate developer, and has delivered 100,000 products to consumers.

Vinpearl owns a network of 18,500 hotel rooms throughout the country.

The Vietnam Investment Group (VIG) is a private investment fund owned by his family. It holds 33 percent of Vingroup’s shares and 33.48 percent of VinFast Singapore which owns VinFast factory in Vietnam.

Vingroup now owns six tech companies, namely VinBigData, VinAI, VinBrain, VinHMS, VinCSS and VinITIS.

Huong, Vuong's wife, is vice president of Vingroup. Pham Thuy Hang, Huong’s sister, is vice president of the group. Pham Nhat Anh Quan, Vuong’s son, born in 1993, has been working for Vingroup since 2015.

Vuong and his family now directly or indirectly own nearly 60 percent of Vingroup’s shares.

The retail empire of Nguyen Dang Quang

Quang is chair of the board of directors, and founder and leader of Masan Group (MSN), a private group operating in the fields of consumer goods, food, finance, mining and retail.

Quang and his wife, both born in 1963, are founders of the group valued at $5 billion (as of April 2023).

They run an ecosystem of enterprises with operations in many business fields. Masan Group directly owns four subsidiaries and indirectly owns tens of subsidiaries and affiliates.

These include businesses in retail (WinCommerce-CrownX), consumer goods manufacturing (Masan Consumer), husbandry and meat processing (MeatLife), telecommunications (Wintel), bubble tea (Phuc Long), and mining (Masan Hightech Materials).

It owns one of the largest tungsten mines in the world.

Of these, Masan Consumer (MCH), Masan Hightech Materials (MSR) and Masan MeatLife (MML) are listed companies. By mid-April 2023, Masan Consumer’s capitalization value had reached $2 billion, while Masan Hightech Materials had $500 million and Masan MeatLife had $500 million.

To develop the ecosystem of businesses operating in a wide range of fields, Masan has made many merger and acquisitions (M&A) deals over the last few years.

In 2021-2022, the Masan Group made over 10 big M&A deals. It spent a lot to buy CrownX which owned the Vinmart retail chain and gradually raised its ownership ratio to 85 percent.

Prior to that, Masan acquired all of Vinacafe Bien Hoa’s shares from major shareholders, including VinaCapital.

Quang’s wife – Nguyen Hoang Yen – does not appear regularly, but she holds important positions at Masan Group and subsidiaries. She is a member of Masan’s board of directors, a member of the board of directors and deputy CEO of Masan Consumer (MCH), and a member of the board of directors at Vinacafe Bien Hoa (VCF), NET Detergent (NET) and Vinh Hao Mineral Water.

Yen owns 50.9 million MSN shares and 900,000 MCH. Her total stock assets are VND3.4 trillion.

Quang draws up business strategies for the group and makes important decisions, while Yen undertakes important operations, including the collection of input materials for production. Quang’s family directly and indirectly holds 25 percent of shares of Masan Group.

Quang was named in Forbes’ lists of billionaires in 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023. The latest list released in early April; his assets were valued at $1.3 billion.
