Direct Deposit Requirement: What Counts?

While the above list only includes bank bonuses without a direct deposit requirement, you may be surprised to learn that other bank offers that do require a direct deposit may still be within your reach.

The crux is around what each bank considers to be a qualifying direct deposit.

Spoiler alert: it can vary.

So, what counts as a “qualifying” direct deposit?

It’s true, the bank does not see all deposits as equal.

Why not?

It gets to the heart of what the bank is trying to have you do by offering a bonus reward in exchange for opening a new account and setting up direct deposit: commit to the account and continue using it, long after you’ve met the bonus requirements.

So, to that end, a “qualifying direct deposit” is, strictly speaking, a reoccurring deposit made by your employer or the government (such as for social security benefits).

But, as we alluded earlier, this definition is not shared among all banks.

For example:

Capital One 360: Transfers from brokerage accounts such as Fidelity, Schwab, and Ameritrade fulfill the direct deposit requirement.
Bank of America: Transfers from prepaid debit cards such as Bluebird and Serve count as direct deposits.
KeyBank: Transfers from PayPal will be coded as direct deposit.
U.S. Bank: Transfers initiated from many online banks such as Ally, Discover, and USAA will fulfill the direct deposit requirement.

As always, look to the bonus terms and fine print to guide you. It will almost always clearly state what counts as direct deposit and what does not.
