Attorneys' admission exams | Gawie le Roux Institute of Law (2024)

We often receive questions from people who are interested in our courses.
A few of the most frequently asked questions, along with our answers, are listed below.

What is the board exam?

The attorneys’ admission exam used to be known as the ‘board exam’. The board exam consists of four examinations that you need to pass as a requirement for becoming a registered attorney in South Africa. This exam is now called the ‘competency-based examination for admission as an attorney’.

How many board exams are there in South Africa?

In South Africa the board exam comprises four papers. These are Court Procedures (paper 1), Administration of Estates (paper 2), Attorney’s Practice (Ethics) (paper 3) and Accounting (paper 4). The Gawie le Roux Institute of Law will prepare you for all four of these examinations.

Why are the attorneys’ admission exams important?

It is important to pass the attorneys’ admission exams since this is a requirement if you want to become a registered attorney in South Africa. You will also need to obtain an LLB degree and do articles.

How do you find out whether an attorney has been admitted in South Africa?

All admitted attorneys are listed with the Legal Practice Council (LPC) in South Africa. If you go to the LPC’s website you can search for any attorney by name, province, area/city and practitioner type, and see whether they are currently practising.

What is the role of the Legal Practice Council (LPC) of South Africa?

The Legal Practice Council (LPC) was established by the Legal Practice Act (LPA) 28 of 2014. It is a national, statutory body that regulates the affairs of, and exercises jurisdiction over, all legal practitioners in South Africa. The term ‘legal practitioner’ refers to an attorney or an advocate admitted and enrolled in terms of the LPA.

How long will it take to receive my notes?

Once we have received your payment, we will send your study material via PostNet. You will receive a PostNet tracking number for your parcel. The process usually takes 3–4 working days – that is, from PostNet to PostNet. Alternatively, you may also collect your notes from our offices in Lynnwood, Pretoria, 1 working day after payment has been made.

How do I get the recordings?

Send an email to your designated course coordinator and request your recordings. The course coordinator will then forward your link and login details via email.

Will the notes help me pass the exam?

Yes. Our course notes are geared to the syllabus for each paper. They were written with the aim of helping candidates with “final preparation” for all these exams. They contain vital information you need to know to pass any of these exams. If you need any further encouragement, take a look here at the testimonials of previous candidates who have attended our lectures and used our notes with great success to pass. Here is one such testimony: ‘I am Tshanda Sigwadi and I sat for my board exams in March 2022. I only had Ethics left. I purchased the notes and recordings, I managed to obtain 82%, the highest in Polokwane.’

Do I need an LPC number to register for any of these courses?

No. You can simply enter ‘n/a’ [not applicable] in the required field when registering for the course. You must, however, register with the LPC to write the attorneys’ admission exams.

How long in advance do I need to study for the attorneys’ admission exam?

Generally, we recommend two to three months of study prior to sitting for any of these exams. This will allow ample time for studying, revision, and practical application of the knowledge you have acquired and will most certainly set you up for success. However, we know that most candidates only study for approximately one or two weeks before taking these exams and still pass with good marks. It all depends on the level of your existing knowledge, the time you need to absorb the study material, and also your state of mind. Read our advice here.
