Are there scorpions in Aruba. I was a little worried given the desert climate. Should I shake out my shoes in the morning?

Thanks.

I have never seen a scorpion in Aruba. Never heard anyone mention them or any other large insects as well. Your shoes will probably have some of the nicest sand in the world inside of them.

I don't know of ANY dangerous insects/animals for that matter. There are some annoying sand flea's though, that get your ankles around sunset. Bring some bug spray or buy some at the grocery store. (Then again, it seems it's just me they bite. Most people they don't even bother!)

Shamrock, that was gratuitous. :)

But seriously, there are mosquitoes, not a ton, but there are some, we got a few bites. It's worth it to DEET up just to be on the safe side. I didn't hear of any scorpions while I was there.

Thanks everyone, I didn't think so, but I'm deathly afraid of them, so I thought I'd better check! Already bought the Off, so the mosquitos shouldn't be a problem. Anyway, if I can tough out the horseflies on the Jersey Shore, I should be able to handle anything!

Hi!

We just got back and really had no trouble with insects at all (I came well prepared with bug spray and even dryer sheets that someone recommended!!) The ONLY problem were a gazillion flies at the Trattoria restaurant at the lighthouse. They did warn us, but they didnt put any bug zappers or citronella candles out (do citronella candles work for flies??) At any rate, I wouldnt recommend you eat at La Trattoria anyway. There are many, many better reataurants to choose from. So, you won't have any problems with flies if you don't eat there! e ate at plenty of other restaurants onteh beach, and didnt have a single problem with flies. And didn't see a single scorpion! By the way, my son has unfortunately been stung by a scorpion twice!! He is fine. So, don't worry!

I think the only real concern would be an outside chance of getting Dengue fever from mosquitoes. I hear that Aruba has fire ants. Ive never encountered them.

And dont get crazy.... But Aruba has a few Rattlesnakes. Ive never heard of anyone being bitten, But Im sure the locals could tell you more.

Any danger in an Island is not about to get Highlighted in a Tourism Brochure. And while any of the above is unusual....Its better to be forewarned.

Don't let 'em scare ya Nj --

Other than a few misquitoes and "no-seeums" after a rain and sometimes at dusk (And the giant sea iquanas usually eat them before dawn if they can't find a little dog or a toddler along the beach -- ;) ), most of the natural wildlife is in the more desolate parts of the island.

If you are wondering around the Natural Pool or outside the normal traffic patterns at the gold mine or other "back side of the island" spots, just be aware of your surroundings and picking up rocks and such.

No worries -- Go and have a great time!

I heard, from a reliable source, that the Grizzly Bears have wiped out the scorpions. Seems that the Aruban scorpions couldn't climb and escape. That is why there weren't any in the high rise area.
