Apple is reportedly working with Samsung for a new OLED display technology called two-stack tandem structure that will be used on iPad and Mac models in 2024.

Apple is reportedly planning to release the 2024 models of iPads and Macs with OLED display. Reports have suggested that Apple would use displays manufactured by Samsung. A new report has now revealed that Samsung has begun the production of advanced OLED panels that should meet the criteria Apple has set for its future iPad and Mac models.
According to a report by Korean publication The Elec, Apple has asked Samsung to develop OLED panels that use the two-stack tandem structure. These panels have two emission layers, which help in doubling the brightness on the display and increase the lifespan of the OLED display by as much as four times. Although existing iPhone models have displays with a single-stack structure, Apple is probably going for a double-stack structure in OLED displays for iPads, because iPads are used for longer than iPhones.

The Macs also have a relatively better shelf life than iPhones, which is why Apple may be planning to introduce OLED displays for MacBooks and iMacs. The existing iPad and Mac models do not come with OLED panels yet and are limited to LCD and mini-LED displays, but Apple’s iPhones and Apple Watches feature OLED panels. The maximum display components used on the iPhones and Apple Watches are sourced from Samsung Display, which is one of the largest display manufacturers in the world.
Previous reports suggested that Apple was working with Samsung to develop a 10.86-inch OLED panel last year, but because Samsung felt the project was a bit too expensive for it, it abandoned the project. Samsung also was reportedly not able to manufacture enough display units at the right price. But Samsung is back to production this year if you believe the report.
The two-stack tandem structure is called the "T Series" internally, wherein “T” stands for Tandem. Samsung’s display wing called Samsung Display is reportedly aiming to develop the T1 material for customer evaluation first and then could begin commercial production in 2023. After it has ensured the manufacturing equipment is in place, Samsung will reportedly move on to manufacture the successor called T2, the commercial production of which is expected to begin in 2024.
With this timeline in mind, it will be the T2 material that Apple is likely to use for its iPads and Macs in 2024, per the report. But while Samsung will supply Apple with its new OLED panels, it will use them first on its own Galaxy Tab and Galaxy Book models just so it can stay ahead in the competition.
