Synopsis

Startup founders and VCs are scrambling to find ways to extend cash runways. In the past three weeks, at least two dozen early-stage ventures slashed salaries and cut 1,500 jobs. From providing bridge funding to opening debt lines to offering emotional support, VCs are leaving no stone unturned in their effort to save startups.

When more than 350 startup founders dialled into a Zoom video call, organised recently by TiE Mumbai and hosted by prolific startup investor Sanjay Mehta, a partner at an early-stage venture-capital fund (VC) shared a story. “In the previous down cycle, when we invested in RedBus in 2008-09, our term sheet was one among four. The other three disappeared, while we decided to go ahead with it,” said Manu Rekhi, a partner at Inventus Partners.
