All About Wombling And How To Make Money From It - (2024)

If you saw someone lingering around a supermarket car park or fast food restaurant, would you think it looked suspicious? What would you say if you found out that they were wombling?

Womblers are receipt hunters who collect loyalty points and other rewards from other people’s shoppping. You know the saying ‘one man’s trash is another man’s treasure’?

Keep reading to find out what wombling is and how people are actually making hundreds of pounds a month from doing it.

What Is Wombling?

Wombling is all about collecting other people’s discarded receipts and accumulating their missed loyalty card points or price promise guarantees.

The name comes from the furry creatures known as ‘The Wombles’, who collected and re-used other people’s litter to make something useful out of it.

You can womble almost anywhere that has a loyalty card scheme as most places will usually let you add missed points onto your card if you give them a valid receipt. However with wombling, the receipt is obviously not yours!

How Do I Make Or Save Money From Wombling?

There are lots of ways you can use someone else’s discarded receipt to make yourself some extra money. Here are some examples:

Morrisons

If a customer didn’t use a Match and More card with their shop, you can add the points onto your card afterwards if you pop into a Morrisons store with the receipt and your Match and More card.

You can only add 2 receipts every 2 weeks and you must make sure that the receipts are less than 30 days old. You receive 5 points for every £1 spent in stores and online and 10 points for every litre of petrol bought at a Morrisons petrol station. 5,000 points = £5 Morrisons voucher.

Sainsburys

With Sainsburys, you can collect any receipts where the Nectar points haven’t been used yet and add them onto your card within 14 days at the customer service desk. You can also collect brand match vouchers to get a bonus on your next shop.

Tesco

At Tesco, you can make money cashing in on their Clubcard loyalty scheme. For every £1 you spend in Tesco, you receive 1 Clubcard point. Every 1 Clubcard point is worth 1p in Clubcard vouchers. You will then need a minimum of 150 Clubcard points to get a voucher which will equal £1.50.

You can take up to 2 receipts per day to the customer service desk to get the points added to your own card, and the receipts must be less than 14 days old.

Superdrug

It’s not just supermarket receipts that you can use to womble! Superdrug’s loyalty points can also be added to cards later. You don’t need to go into a store to do this although the details from the receipt are needed to claim the points.

Boots

Likewise with Boots, if you find a receipt you have 45 days to go back into a store and claim the Advantage Card points.

However with Boots, you can only womble receipts that have been validated. This means that the customer has said they have an Advantage Card but they’ve left it at home.

McDonald’s

McDonald’s run a loyalty card scheme via stickers on their hot drinks cups. When you buy 6 hot drinks at McDonald’s, they give you the 7th free. So if you see an empty McDonald’s cup, grab it!

They also run occasional promotions for example the McDonald’s Monopoly, in which you can collect packaging with an online code that can be use to enter to win food and prizes.

KFC

KFC run a loyalty scheme called The Colonel Club where you collect chicken stamps via their app. You can save them up and get rewarded with free food and money off. Just by signing up to the app you get 3 free stamps, which is equivalent to a free side or beverage.

Wombling a KFC receipt for £3+ will get you 1 stamp, and a £15+ spend will get you 2 stamps. You can redeem your points for free food or drinks when you hit 3, 7 or 11 chicken stamps. You’ll need to add the receipt within 7 days and use the rewards within 3 months.

Costa Coffee

This list is becoming very exhaustive! If you didn’t think the above was enough, you can also womble at Costa Coffee!

If you download their app or pick up a free loyalty card when you’re next in store, you get a bonus 100 points when you register your account. You can add discarded receipts onto your account at the till.

Subway

You can also collect old subway receipts to earn yourself a treat. For every transaction ‘you’ make, you will receive 10 points for every £1. 100 points can be redeemed for a hot drink, 200 points for a snack, 500 points for a 6” sub and 1000 points for a 12” sub.

Other Ways To Womble

There are some apps that will actually give you free Amazon vouchers for scanning receipts from pretty much any shop. For example, with Receipt Hog, you get points for uploading photographs of your receipts, and these points can then be converted into rewards including Amazon gift cards and cash via Paypal.

Certain cashback apps, including Shopmium, offer money back when you buy a specific item. And you never know, sometimes these items can appear on wombled receipts!

Is Wombling Legal?

Yes! Wombling is completely legal. Although with this being said, a general rule among womblers is that you can’t take receipts out of bins or pick them up in the shop as this is considered stealing. If you want to collect other people’s discarded receipts, you can only take them from outside the shop. For example, in car parks, from trolleys, in bushes etc.
