Africa is highly vulnerable to climate change, and its impacts—flooding, droughts, cyclones, sea-level rise– are already driving shifts in how Africans grow food, live, and earn their livelihoods.

Yet, most of the climate funding for the continent goes toward climate mitigation rather than adaptation. This is a problem, partly because adaptation creates well-paying jobs and diversifies economies, strengthening societal resilience. Agriculture is one sector where adaptation promises immense potential.

For example, Soupah Kitchen & Grocery Technology Company, a woman-led agribusiness based in Ibadan, Nigeria, is unlocking innovative solutions to climate change to advance the continent’s energy transition.

With support from the African Development Bank, the Global Centre on Adaptation, and its Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program (AAAP), Soupah Kitchen uses resource-smart technology to control the environment for growing lettuce, kale, leafy green, and herbs. The start-up produces cheaper and healthier vegetables through hydroponics on Ibadan rooftops than those grown on rural farms.

Ifeloluwa Olatayo, Soupah Kitchen’s CEO, was among 15 winners of the 2021African Youth Adaptation (YouthADAPT) Solutions Challenge organized by the AAAP, a joint initiative of the African Development Bank and the Global Center on Adaptation.

Olatayo said, “Our resource-smart technology is designed to grow up to three tonnes of fresh food within a 650 square-meter area. It will enhance the urban landscape and improve the air quality in our cities.”

She added that Soupah Kitchen farms could sustainably plant with 95% less water than traditional farms without chemical fertilizers. Yields from the company’s farm are 30% larger than those of conventional farms and are produced in half the time.

Using vertical hydroponic technology, Soupah Kitchen can cultivate 1,600kg of vegetables within a 26-day cycle.

A desire to expand her business and impact led Olatayo to apply for the YouthADAPT program.

“With the YouthADAPT opportunity, my enterprise received funding of $100,000. This has been enormously helpful, and the investment made thus far in our implementation plan has had a demonstrable impact in strengthening our climate-conscious mission. The one-year accelerator program has enabled me to learn about the best financing options to scale our impact,” Olatayo said.

Soupah Kitchen plans to tap into blockchain technology to replicate and scale up the technology in other African countries.

In addition to the YouthADAPT funding, Soupah Kitchen received €10,000 from the Netherlands Embassy in Nigeria as a Food Connection Challenge Winner.

In recognition of the private sector’s critical role in closing financing gaps for green growth and building climate resilience, the African Development Bank Group has chosen as the theme for its 2023 Annual Meetings, Mobilizing Private Sector Financing for Climate and Green Growth in Africa.

The Annual Meetings will take place from 22 to 26 May in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has provided a range of items to persons with disabilities (PWDs) at Ekumfi in the Central Region, prioritising women with disabilities and mothers caring for children with special needs.

This initiative echoes the International Women’s Day theme: ‘Count Her In, Inspire Inclusion’ by aiming to empower marginalized communities and uplift the underprivileged.

In an interview, the Area Seventy of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Elder Anthony Kaku, stressed the pivotal role of aid and assistance in fostering stronger, more resilient communities while reiterating the church’s commitment to supporting those in need. “When the community asked for our help, we looked and realised we could afford to help them, so we did. We came here to support those who are in need,” he said.

He further explained that the donation included a variety of essential items. They include 30 wheelchairs and 10 pairs of crutches which will be helpful for those with mobility challenges; 300 packs of sanitary pads will address hygiene needs; school supplies included 1,000 notebooks, along with 1,000 pens; food items were 200 bags of 5-kg bags of rice, 17 cartons of cooking oil, five bags of gari, and three bags of beans.

“This is something we do throughout the country. I have attended several of these things that we have done, so we look at how they are going to help the community. We give what will benefit the communities and institutions. Cape Coast, for example, we gave some to the police, we gave them things to work with, and there are many other institutions that I have attended,” Elder Kaku revealed.

He emphasized the importance of community support arguing that if everyone contributes even a little to help those in need, the burden on the government would lessen, adding that mutual aid is a cornerstone of a strong society.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Legendary Capital Events/Kidzplace, Eunice Smart Kwainoe, who received some of the items on behalf of the beneficiaries highlighted the challenges faced by women in Ekumfi, whilst highlighting the importance of investing in education, healthcare, and economic opportunities to unlock their full potential.

“Despite these countless accomplishments of women, we must also acknowledge the challenges that many of our sisters face each day. In Ekumfi, as in many other parts of the world, women encounter barriers that prevent them from actualising their full participation in society, such as limited access to education, healthcare, economic opportunities, and decision-making roles. Additionally, cultural norms and gender stereotypes often constrain the potential of our women, limiting our ability to thrive and succeed,” she noted.

She advocated for a two-pronged approach to girls’ empowerment – local action and education. By investing in local initiatives and equipping girls with skills through education and training, they will gain the tools to reach their full potential and uplift their communities.

Mrs. Kwainoe also highlighted two key areas for women’s empowerment, namely, healthcare and economic opportunity. She said prioritising women’s health through accessible services and fostering economic participation through entrepreneurship or employment are crucial. She also emphasised dismantling gender stereotypes to create a society that respects and values women’s contributions.

Speaking to the Chairman of Center for Employment for PWDs and the Chamber for Entrepreneurs with Disabilities, Alex Kojo Tetteh called on authorities to ensure that public places are friendly for people with disabilities, enabling them to access employment opportunities and contribute meaningfully to society.

“It is very difficult for people with disabilities to access employment centres because the centres are not assessable, they are not friendly, public places are not friendly, and hospitals are not friendly. We call on every development-oriented person, to ensure that our public places are accessible and friendly for persons with disabilities, so the disabled people will also be able to work to earn income,” he said.

He added that when persons with disabilities (PWDs) work and are able to generate income, they become self-reliant and support the development of their communities. Mr. Tetteh whilst thanking the Church, said the items would “really benefit us all.”

The just-ended Africa Cup of Nations lived up to the hype for many stakeholders including Ghana’s Juliet Bawuah.

The well-respected Juliet was recruited by the continental governing body, Confederation of African Football (CAF) to perform Venue Editor duties. And, just as she has done in previous engagements, this, too, she rose to the occasion, delivering excellently.

As the Venue Editor for Bouaké, which was one of the host cities for the tournament, her quality shone through, giving off her very best.

In a post on her socials after the tournament reflecting on the entire experience, she said: “I am glad to have played a part in this as Venue Editor in Bouaké and other times in a supporting role as Media Officer. Even though I have worked on two recent FIFA World Cups in similar roles, this was new territory. I embraced it as a whole, working and serving the media.”

She also praised the complete organization of the tournament and all who worked tirelessly around it.
