Is it true that your CEO earns$2.3 million a year?

No. The following “Think Before You Donate” false rumor
continually resurfaces in the form of social media posts and emails:

“CEO and owner Mark Curran profits $2.3 million a year. Goodwill is a very catchy name for his business. You donate to his business and then he sells the items for PROFIT. He pays nothing for his products and pays his workers minimum wage! Nice Guy. $0.00 goes to help anyone! Stop giving to this man.”

Although affiliated with Goodwill Industries International, Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee operates through our own governing board of directors. The mission of Goodwill is to sell donated goods to provide employment and training opportunities for people who have disabilities and others who have trouble finding and keeping jobs. Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee operates 30 retail stores, one outlet, about 60 donation sites and eight Career Solutions Centers where clients can receive job services. Almost all of those services are provided free of charge, and thousands of people receive assistance each year.

Does Goodwill of Middle Tennessee Pay Its Workers Minimum Wage or More?

Yes. While some Goodwills utilize the “Special Minimum Wage Certificate” as an employment tool, Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee DOES NOT. In fact, all of ourroughly 1,500employees are paidminimum wage or more.

Each Goodwill Industries is a separate, locally chartered not-for-profit corporation governed by its own board of directors, which means policies and procedures vary at each agency.
