A guide to static caravan insurance | Haven (1)

Imagine having your own personal home away from home, available when you like, as long as you like. It isn’t difficult to see the appeal of owning your own place, but a static caravan can represent a significant financial investment. So, it’s only natural that you may want to protect your property with insurance.

If you’re the owner of a permanently sited static caravan (one with plumbing and a permanent electrical link up), you can get insurance similar to regular home insurance. In fact, most holiday parks will require you to have a basic level of cover including public liability insurance, though this is not a legal requirement. However, experienced caravan owners will know well that insuring your caravan is more than simply a matter of complying with your park’s terms. Static caravan insurance is necessary protection against damage from bad weather, accidents, and mishaps.

Static caravan insurance can also reimburse you for stolen or damaged contents; and cover other items on your pitch. This static insurance guide will lay out all you need to know when it comes to protecting your holiday home.

What is Insured?

Static caravan insurance protects you against loss or damage to your caravan and its contents, typically it covers such things as fire, flood, storm, theft and subsidence.

To take our Bourne Leisure Caravan and Lodges arranged Insurance provided by Aviva as an example, this is what is covered by static caravan insurance:

  • Loss or damage to the structure of your caravan (including any veranda, fixed storage units where the specification has been agreed by local park management, built-in equipment, fixtures, fittings, furnishings and utensils supplied with the caravan at the time of purchase)

  • Loss of any rent due to you if your caravan can’t be lived in following insured damage – up to £400 per week (£1,200 overall)

  • Accidental damage to fixed glass and sanitary fittings

  • Replacement of external door locks if keys are lost or stolen – up to £250

  • Public liability up to £5,000,000 if you’re held legally liable (as the owner or occupier) for injury to a third party or damage to their property

  • Accidental damage to any service cables and underground pipes that you are legally responsible for

Optional cover:

  • Contents cover – loss or damage to your content

How much does static caravan insurance cost?

The price of your static caravan insurance will vary depending on factors such as the market value of your caravan, its age and extras such as decking, veranda and contents. At Haven, our caravan insurance is based on size.

The prices are as follows:

  • 10ft model £211

  • 12ft model £276

  • 14ft model £352

  • Twin model £481

Contents cover £30

Payment options can be discussed with Bourne Leisure Owner Services on 0333 202 5300.

Here’s the list of things that are not covered by our Haven insurance plan:

  • Sheds and similar structures that don’t form an integral part of your caravan

  • Damage from wear and tear, electrical and mechanical breakdown, or gradual deterioration

  • Wet or dry rot

  • Storm damage to fences, gates, hedges, awnings or toilet tents

  • Loss or damage if your caravan is overturned by storm or flood – unless it was fixed to
the ground at all four corners of the chassis by suitable anchors

  • Certain losses or damage (eg, theft or malicious damage) caused by you

  • Motorised vehicles, aircraft or watercraft

Optional cover:

  • Theft of contents in the open

  • Loss or damage caused by you

Are there restrictions on cover?

In addition to what is not covered listed above, there are also certain limitations that may apply to your policy, for example:

  • The excess. This is the amount you must contribute or will be deducted from your settlement in the event that you should make a claim. At Haven, we offer a standard excess of £50

  • Monetary limits for certain covers

  • Clauses that exclude certain types of loss or damage. For example: we won’t cover loss or damage from any escape of water if your caravan is not in use from 31st October to 1st March – unless the main stop co*ck has been turned off

Optional cover:

  • We’ll cover against theft if the caravan has been broken into or out of, or entry has been forced

When does the cover start and end?

  • Our Haven policy runs from the dates shown on your certificate until 30th April, then for 12 months thereafter unless you cancel the policy.

What if I want to cancel my insurance with Haven?

  • As per your rights as a consumer, you can cancel your policy within 14 days of purchase or renewal (or from the day you receive your policy or renewal documents, if this is later). However, if you do choose to cancel your Bourne Leisure Caravan and Lodges arranged Insurance, you must provide us with proof of alternative insurance. If the insurance has already started when you cancel then we’ll simply reduce your refund to pay for the time you were covered.

To cancel your policy, contact Bourne Leisure Owner Services on 0333 202 5300.

You’re free to cancel your policy at any time during your period of cover, but you won’t have any regrets in choosing us as your insurance provider!
