9 Best Career Options in Commerce Without Maths? Pro Tip Alert!

“Do I opt for maths with commerce or not?“ Stressing out on this?

Don’t worry; you are not alone in this! Most of your fellow students opting for commerce are in this dilemma right now.

I am a commerce student, and I’ve been through this situation.

I opted for maths as an additional subject, but some of my friends chose it as a core subject, and some did not take it on. This means I have experience with all three options.

So, I can assure you that I’ll guide you through this topic properly with all three perspectives in mind in this blog.

Just follow along and stop worrying!

Table of Contents-

Subjects in Commerce Without Maths (And the PRO TIP!)

9 Best Career Options in Commerce Without Maths? (+Pro Tip Alert!) (1)

First, let’s see what subject options you will have in commerce.

Compulsory Subjects:

You do not have any choice in the following four subjects. These are mandatory for you to study when opting for commerce.

  1. English
  2. Accountancy
  3. Economics
  4. Business Studies

*BYJU’S website lists maths and information practices as a mandatory subject in commerce for all. Well, generally you have the choice to opt for it or not. To confirm the status of the subject’s availability, I will suggest you reach your mentors.

Optional Subjects

This list of optional subjects you can opt for, along with the four core subjects. But, you may have to check the availability of the subject you want in the school you are applying to for admission.

  1. Physical Education
  2. Fine Arts
  3. Psychology
  4. Informatics Practices
  5. Computer Sciences
  6. Mathematics**

**Additional Subject

Now, being a commerce aspirant, you must know that you can opt for six subjects instead of the usual 5!

This might sound a little upsetting at first.

Why would anyone want to increase their burden? Right?

Well, then read this carefully!

You have the option to opt for mathematics as a sixth or additional subject along with the four compulsory and one optional subject. E.g. you can go for fine arts as an optional subject and mathematics as an additional subject.

Now, the secret is that your score in Maths (additional) will not be added to your total percentage. But, you will be marked as a maths student on your Detailed Marks Certificate.

You just need to clear the exam merely!

And for this, some universities/colleges also give extra weightage to their merit list during the admission process.

I’ve discussed this topic in detail in one of my other blogs. Head out there to learn about it.

Is Commerce With Maths a Better Option?

9 Best Career Options in Commerce Without Maths? (+Pro Tip Alert!) (7)

This is a very debatable question. And to be honest, I can not give a Yes/No answer for it. However, I can support the statement in a few contexts from both perspectives.

YES, commerce with maths is a better option because it will help you develop specific analytical skills, which are very useful for competitive exams.

Also, it will widen the career choices. For instance, you need maths to apply for economics courses in many colleges/universities.

Moreover, it will help you get priority in the admission process in some colleges/universities.

And, NO, commerce without maths is as good as with maths because it will not limit your career choices to a great extent. When I say maths is necessary for economics courses, I don’t mean that you can not get admission to any college.

Furthermore, even if you go for maths as an additional subject, you still have to prepare the syllabus that a core maths student would prepare. This means you have to devote your time to maths even if you just want to clear the exam.

Now, I would not recommend doing this if you are a below-average student as it might affect your core subjects result. I don’t see a point in opting for an additional subject at the cost of losing marks in core subjects.

So, you must take a reasonable time to think about it, talk to your mentors and then make a wise decision as it is crucial for your career.

  4. Which are the best career options in commerce without maths with salary?
