7 Ways To Save Money On Groceries (2024)

Grocery Budget

Are you struggling with figuring out how your going to make your grocery budget work? Between breakfast, lunches, dinners and snacks how are you going to feed your family and provide healthy meals? I have sat wondering this until I made a few money saving changes. Discover 7 easy ways save money on groceries.

7 Ways To Save Money On Groceries

1. Set up a grocery budget

You are probably wondering how a budget can save you money. A grocery budget sets the limit on how much you can spend. If you stay below your budget you are saving money.

If you can make better choices and plan your grocery shopping you are saving money. Setting up a grocery budget is real easy, simply add groceries into your monthly budget ensuring to allot enough to cover feeding your family for the time period you choose. The average family spends $800 a month on groceries lets see if you can spend less and save more.

2. Meal plan and grocery shop your meal plan

You have probably heard me talk about meal plans before. I love meal plans. With meal plans I know what is for dinner. No more wandering the grocery store last minute and over spending money. Dinner is prepared and ready for when I get home from work.

No more drive thru window food orders. When you set a meal plan and pair up your grocery list accordingly you are saving money. You are saving money in a multiple of ways. No more food waste = saving money. Meals are ready and planned = saving money. Grocery lists = saving money. You know what groceries you need, no more wandering the aisles means more money saved.

You can checkout my favorite meal plan, My FreezEasy. Every month the meals are different, I can choose gluten free meals, vegetarian meals, slow cooker recipes, chicken recipes and much more. Meal planning ensures you have yummy family friendly meals every night without going over your grocery budget.

3. Stop buying things you don’t need

I was so guilty of this and I hated it. I hated the food waste and the money waste. Think about it how much food waste do you have in between grocery shopping trips. That food waste adds up, it adds up in dollars. Money you could be saving. You can read about the 7 things we stopped buying that saved us over $750 a month.

4. Shop sales flyers and stock up

Before you go shopping, once you have set up your meal plans and your grocery list checkout the grocery store sales flyers. Why? Store sales can save you money. If you are loyal to one store it is time to throw that theory and practice out.

You are here to save money and feed your family great meals. Check and compare, which stores are offering the better deal for the items you need this week or this month? Can you shop the sale and stock up on items you regularly buy.

5. Clip, cut, use coupons

Coupons are free money, use them. If you are trying to save money clip the flyer coupons. Search the web and find online printable coupons to save money. Sometimes coupons come in the mail or you can request coupons from your favorite products. Match up your coupons to the sales flyer prices and you save twice the money.

If you are brand loyal, now is the time to try new products and opt for new brands that will save you money. If your meal plan calls for a certain item and it is on sale and you have a coupon for it, use it, buy it and save. If the coupon item isn’t a brand you normally use, buy it still. It is a great chance to try new products and save money.

Have you tried Rakuten? It’s an online money saving app that helps you save money (and earn cash back) on all your online purchases. Give it a try and get $10 free my treat.

6. Stop shopping the cash register

Stop shopping the items at the cash register and end of aisle flashy items. Or the items placed right at eye level that aren’t on your grocery list. The magazines and chocolates placed at the checkout are easy to grab items that will increase your grocery bill.

The pre-cut flowers from the floral department and the pre-sliced fruit and vegetables will also add up your grocery bill. Stick to your grocery list and you will save money.

7. Do not shop hungry

I can not think of one thing that will throw off your grocery budget more than shopping hungry. You are guaranteed to sway off your grocery list and your meal plan if you shop hungry.

I know the feeling you are rushed to get the weekly shop done, it is after work and you haven’t had a snack or eaten dinner yet. Don’t do it! You will save more money shopping after a meal or scheduling your grocery shopping the next morning.
