Patch compiled a list of towns and their average school tax bills - easily the highest proportion of your overall property tax bill - from the highest to the lowest.
The data comes from the 2015 tax bills compiled by the state Department of Community Affairs, which recently released the information. New Jersey has among the highest property taxes in the nation, and the state's average tax bills are around $4,000.

But because the state regionalizes its school operations much less than every other state, each town is expected to ante up for their own school district.
Poorer towns also pay a significantly lower share of property taxes - but receive a larger share of state revenue - largely because of the Abbott v. Burke court decision, which was intended to provide remedies to ensure thatstudents receive public education in accordance with the state constitution.
