When you leave your job for any reason, you have the option to roll over a 401(k) to an IRA. This involves opening an account with a broker or other financial institution and completing the paperwork with your 401(k) administrator to move your funds over. Usually any investments in your 401(k) will be sold.
A 401(k) rollover to an IRA takes 60 days to complete. Once you receive a 401(k) check with your balance, you have 60 days to deposit the funds in the IRA account. If you choose a direct custodian-to-custodian transfer, it can take up to two weeks for the 401(k) to IRA rollover to complete.
Most pre-retirement payments you receive from a retirement plan or IRA can be “rolled over” by depositing the payment in another retirement plan or IRA within 60 days. You can also have your financial institution or plan directly transfer the payment to another plan or IRA.
Can I roll over my retirement plan assets into a Roth IRA? If you have a Roth 401(k) or 403(b), you can roll over your money into a Roth IRA, tax-free. If you have a traditional 401(k) or 403(b), you can roll over your money into a Roth IRA.
This rollover transaction isn't taxable, unless the rollover is to a Roth IRA or a designated Roth account from another type of plan or account, but it is reportable on your federal tax return. You must include the taxable amount of a distribution that you don't roll over in income in the year of the distribution.
