Retirees and other investors looking for predictable passive income streams often invest in fixed-income securities — things like certificates of deposit, treasury bills, and corporate bonds.

For those that can tolerate a little more risk, however, dividend stocks can be a great option. This is because dividend stocks can appreciate in addition to providing income, potentially delivering a much greater total return than fixed-income investments.

The top dividend performers are usually large, established companies that command massive shares of their respective markets. Even better, the best dividend stocks don’t slash or eliminate their dividends. In fact, they increase them.

The most trusted of all are the famous Dividend Aristocrats, which are a select group of high-profile stocks on the S&P 500 that have increased their dividends every year for at least a quarter-century. GOBankingRates analyzed each of them — there are currently 67 — and used data from NASDAQ and Google Finance to find the 25 with the highest yields. They’re ranked in ascending order of yield.

Known for relative safety, security, predictability and growing yields, these stocks are a top choice of dividend investors everywhere.

Methodology: In order to find top-paying dividend stocks, GOBankingRates analyzed the S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats index constituents, a collection of all 65 S&P 500 stocks that have increased dividends every year for at least the last 25 years. For each constituent, GOBankingRates found [1] the most recent annual dividend according to NASDAQ data and [2] the June 12, 2023 closing price according to Microsoft Finance Data. GOBankingRates then used these factors to calculate[3] the dividend yield for each constituent. All 65 Dividend Aristocrats were then ranked using factor [3]. All data was collected on and is up-to-date as-of June 12, 2023.

Certainly! The article delves into the world of dividend stocks, contrasting them with fixed-income securities and highlighting the top dividend performers, particularly the Dividend Aristocrats within the S&P 500. The focus here is on stocks that offer both consistent dividends and potential for appreciation, attracting investors seeking passive income with growth potential.

Fixed-income securities like certificates of deposit, treasury bills, and corporate bonds are traditionally favored by retirees and investors seeking predictable passive income. However, dividend stocks, albeit slightly riskier, provide the potential for increased returns through both dividend payouts and stock price appreciation.

The top dividend performers typically belong to well-established companies with significant market shares. The Dividend Aristocrats, a subset of high-profile S&P 500 stocks, are especially revered for consistently increasing dividends annually for at least 25 years. GOBankingRates' analysis involved identifying the 25 highest yielding stocks among these Dividend Aristocrats, using recent dividend data and stock prices to calculate dividend yields.

Let's break down the key concepts touched upon in the article:

  1. Fixed-Income Securities: These are financial instruments like certificates of deposit (CDs), treasury bills (T-bills), and corporate bonds that offer fixed returns over a specified period.

  2. Dividend Stocks: Shares of companies that pay out dividends to shareholders from their profits. These dividends are often paid quarterly and can offer a steady income stream.

  3. Dividend Aristocrats: These are top-performing S&P 500 companies known for consistently increasing their dividends annually for at least 25 consecutive years.

  4. Yield: The yield represents the return on investment from dividends and is calculated by dividing the annual dividend by the stock price.

  5. S&P 500: A stock market index that measures the performance of 500 large companies listed on stock exchanges in the United States.

  6. Market Capitalization: It denotes the total market value of a company's outstanding shares and is calculated by multiplying the stock's price by the total number of outstanding shares.

  7. REITs (Real Estate Investment Trusts): These are companies that own, operate, or finance income-producing real estate across various property sectors.

  8. Asset Management Firms: Companies that manage and invest funds on behalf of clients, often offering various investment products and services.

  9. Multinational Corporations: Large companies that operate and have a presence in multiple countries.

  10. Diversification: A strategy that involves investing in various asset classes or sectors to spread risk.

This article aims to guide investors, particularly those seeking reliable dividend-yielding stocks, by highlighting the top-performing companies known for their consistent dividends and potential for growth.
