17 Hobbies That Make Money - Time and Pence (2024)

They say that if you enjoy doing your work then you’ll never work a day in your life. What better way, therefore, than to earn whilst doing something you love with hobbies that make money.

There are so many ways to make money, as you know I already have a few income streams myself. Have you read my post 27 Ways to Make Money from Home in the UK? If you are looking to earn an extra income, this will give you a few ideas to get you started.

Today, however, I will share with you specifically how you can turn your enjoyment time into cash with 17 hobbies that make money. These are perfect for stay at home moms, retirees or even if you are looking to earn extra money on-line.

1. Walking

If you like walking, then there are a few ways you can make money whilst enjoying the fresh air and getting fit too.

  • Set up a Youtube channel and share your walks. You can then monetize your channel with advertisem*nts.
  • Download the sweatcoin app and earn while you walk.
  • Set up a walking business. If you know your local area well, maybe you could provide some guided walks for people near you.

2. Blogging

Many people start a blog as a hobby to write about things that interest them. There are a million things you can blog about and it’s a great way to earn some extra money. It’s one of my favourite income earners.

Here are some blogging ideas:

If you don’t already have a blog, I have some really simple step by step instructions here and you could get set up and ready to go within an hour or so.

Once you have set up your blog you can make money with it straight away through:

  • Affiliate Marketing (If you’ve not heard of it or want to know more, read my post ‘How Does Affiliate Marketing Work a Step by Step Guide).
  • Advertising on Your Blog
  • Sponsored Posts (This is essentially working with brands)

3. Pet Sitting

If you love animals then why not make money pet sitting or dog walking. You’ll be doing something you enjoy and getting paid for it at the same time. You can advertise yourself or go through a company, which is probably better, as you will have all the necessary insurances already in place. If you are interested in knowing more about this, read about this work from home opportunity dog boarding with Tailster.

4. Making Crafts

This is a great way to make money and is one of the ways I first started to make money for myself. It’s so easy to get started, even if you don’t think you are creative or have any skills. You can create anything that you love creating that will sell. I wrote a whole post about it here with 65 ideas!

5. Photography

If you like taking photographs there are so many ways you can make money from your shots. Here are a few:

6. Drawing

If you have an artistic talent and are good with a sketch pad, you could turn your art into cash. Either producing art to order (people love having personalised illustrations of themselves or their pets) or creating art pieces and selling on-line or at art exhibitions.

7. Singing

Apart from the obvious and creating your own album which is just a dream for most, there are a few other ways you could make money singing:

  • Become a wedding or event singer.
  • Create jingles for radio ads.
  • Get a job singing over the summer at holiday parks or in hotels.

8. Writing

Do you love writing? Don’t think you’re good enough to make money from it? Think again! It’s never been easier to be an author and you can now self publish with Kindle Direct Publishing and sell your short stories on-line. With social media, you can promote your stories easily and drive sales to your books.

As well as writing short stories, there are other writing opportunities, such as making money as a blogger or becoming a freelance writer.

9. Flower Arranging

If you love flowers and floral arrangements you could make some really good money from flower arranging. I used to do this and even if you’ve never done it before, if it’s something that appeals to you, I teach you how to make money from it in this post here.

10. Sewing

I am rubbish at sewing but you may not be! Some people really enjoy sewing and there are so many things you can make and sell. I covered this in my recent post, 65 crafts that make money but as well as selling items you make, you could make money by teaching others your skills!

11. Cleaning

This is a little strange to me because I don’t think of cleaning as enjoyable or as a hobby (although I do love to stay organised and having a good declutter), but I know a lot of people love to clean and it’s certainly possible to make money from it.

  • Set up a cleaning business (You can start with family and friends).
  • Do casual work for a cleaning agency.
  • Become a ‘cleanfluencer’ and work with brands (think Mrs Hinch on Instagram).

12. Gardening

If you love getting out in your garden and have a little bit of knowledge then gardening could be your money earner. Here are some ways you could make money with your fingers:

  • Set up your own gardening business (I had a friend who did this and couldn’t keep up with demand)!
  • Set up a Youtube channel and share your gardening skills, knowledge and secrets
  • Hold gardening classes where you show other keen gardeners what to do.
  • Run children’s gardening parties.

13. Painting

You will have to be a little bit talented to make money with this but if you’re not sure, ask your friends and family to be brutally honest. I find that many talented artists don’t believe in themselves when really they are amazing at what they do.

You could make money painting by setting up classes or selling your creations online or at local fayres and exhibitions.

14. Poetry

I’ve always been quite good at poetry and do make a little bit of money out of it. I’m sure I could make more if I put more time in as there are so many ways you can monetise your beautiful words. Here are some of them:

  • Sell your poems to greetings card companies.
  • Frame your poems and sell them as gifts.
  • Write personalised poems to order and sell your talents on fiverr.

15. Playing Games On-line

Do you enjoy playing games on-line. Did you know there are companies that will pay you to play? Companies such as Swagbucks, InboxPounds or Inboxdollars if you are in the US will pay you in cash or gift cards for simply playing games and carrying out other simple tasks on-line.

16. Cooking and Baking

Are you a whizz in the kitchen? Can you create beautiful cakes or tasty treats? If the answer is yes, then why not making money doing something you love and probably spend time doing anyway?

Many local independent shops will be happy to sell your goods or you can sell them yourself, either on a market stall, at local fayres, or visiting local businesses.

As your business grows, you could branch into catering for larger events in your area or children’s parties?

The option to stick with a specific product, ie, cakes for parties and weddings or branch out into a variety of foods is yours.

17. Reading

Do you love to read? Do you think you could read a lot? If so, maybe proofreading is for you!

This could be a really interesting way to make money as you will get the chance to read books or information and get paid for it too! You will obviously need a good standard of English but if it’s something that interests you, there is a simple and reasonably priced course you can take from home here.

So, there are 17 hobbies that make money. Do you spend time doing any of them already?

If you enjoyed this post or know anyone who may benefit from it, please do share it on Facebook, Instagram or Pinterest! Thank you!
