10 Tips to Give Your Small Master Bedroom a Makeover on a Tight Budget (2024)

Who doesn’t love spending a weekend in a hotel? Tom and I loved our romantic getaway at the Loews Hotel Minneapolis this past fall and when we came home our bedroom felt, well, a little underwhelmed. After downsizing our house we set out with the intention of creating a home rather than a well-decorated house. We wanted each room to have a purpose. A living room should feel cozy and welcoming, a kitchen should feel warm and open and a master bedroom should feel relaxing and tranquil. Unfortunately, our dated comforter (that was literally filled with holes) and our too-small discount sheets left us feeling more frustrated and grimy. Now that we are debt free, we have finally been able to give our small master bedroom a makeover that it needed. Here are 10 tips on how you can give your bedroom a makeover even on a tight budget.

Make a list of “must-keeps”

When it comes to re-creating a more tranquil space, you best believe you’re going to need to do some decluttering. But, before you start ditching the things that don’t “spark joy,” be sure to make a list of all the things that make you feel happy and at peace.

For me, a non-negotiable item was my grandma’s frog lamp. I absolutely adore it. I love the style and I love that it was hers. Turning it on every morning instantly helps start my day on a good note.

For Tom, a must-keep was our TV. We have sometimes fought on this issue but really…it is nice to have a place to escape the kids, watch TV, and have snacks in bed…just like we would at a hotel. How to make your master bedroom like a hotel suite.

Set a spending limit

To create a luxury master bedroom on a budget, one super important thing you need to do is, well, have a budget!

For our bedroom makeover, we decided $200 was a pretty good start. Even though we had become completely debt-free, we weren’t about to dig ourselves back into the same credit card debt that got us in trouble in the first place!

Our main focus for our small master bedroom makeover was updating and improving our bedding. I think this is a major importance in all master bedrooms because like they say, it’s where the magic happens. Sleep.

Must haves for a quality bed:

These were the main items we knew we wanted to have for our small master bedroom makeover on a budget. More than anything we wanted a hotel-like feeling as soon as wel walked into our room.

Wait for sales and discounts

Once you have an idea of the items you require to complete your master bedroom makeover, research the best places for you to purchase your items on a budget.

Personally, I didn’t want to order online because I wanted to see and feel all the things I was going to be bringing home.

Once I had my $200 budget in place, I waited for Kohls to send me a beloved 30% off coupon. Which they did. I used the coupon to purchase the mattress protector, sheets, comforter, and a light blanket. This all totaled around $200 and left me with $30 in Kohl’s Cash.

I then returned to Kohl’s to purchase 2 king-sized down alternative pillows using my Kohls Cash. We, of course, want(ed) 4 new pillows, but we had created a budget and we were going to stick to it.

Remember that you may not be able to buy everything you want at one time. Stick to your budget and buy only what you can afford to pay cash for.

Declutter before adding more

The most important part of a small master bedroom makeover doesn’t come from what you buy. Instead, it comes from how you treat your space and what you choose to fill it with. Your bedroom shouldn’t be filled with distractions or trinkets. Instead it should bring instant peace and clarity with a clear, decluttered space.

A basic rule we live by is that before we bring new items into our home, we make sure to get rid of things we are no longer using.

Find pretty storage for ugly items

While creating a luxury minimalist master bedroom requires you to declutter and clear your space, there inevitably will be some less-than-attractive items you are forced to hang onto. Things like phone cords and electronics.

Living in a smaller space, it can be tricky to find storage. You can see just how much stuff I was storing in our small bedroom at one point.

Keep a neutral color palette

The key to creating a space that doesn’t feel overwhelming or over-cluttered is to keep a simple color palette. Choose colors that are lighter and will help brighten up your room. If you love dark colors, you can always try a dark accent wall pull that color into your room through pillows, accessories or paintings. Whenever you go shopping, have a plan and a purpose. That way you are less likely to leave with tons of junk you don’t actually need.

Find a calming scent for your space

The kids may have trashed the kitchen and everything is sticky and stinky. Your small master bedroom does not have to get in on this chaos. Scented candles can work wonders for a small master bedroom makeover. Within a few seconds, a scented candle can fill the room with a warm glow and pleasant smell.

My latest favorite is this cinnamon spiced vanilla candle that I got for Mother’s Day. I’m a sucker for Bath and Body’s 3 wick candles. Shop their collection. Just by lighting this candle for 5-10 minutes a day, it keeps my room smelling fresh (and delicious) for the next few days.

Avoid letting clutter accumulate

One area where we struggle the most in our small master bedroom, is the dresser. It’s so easy to walk into the room and plop our junk onto the dresser. Movies, library books, work papers, laptops. They all seem to make their way onto the dresser.

Now, a few times a week I make it a point to clear any of this excess away. Whatever movies we’re not currently enjoying, I will put them away. Library books get stored on my closet shelf and any miscellaneous papers get sorted.

Do your best to keep your master bedroom as clear of clutter as possible so it really feels luxurious instead of just another chore.

Make your bed a focal point

Another key thing to remember when creating a luxury minimalist master bedroom is to make the bed the main focus in the room. It should be the center of attention.

You don’t have to have a large, over-powering headboard or tons of artwork on the walls in order to make your bed a statement. If you are able to, center the head of your bed against a back wall. You can make it stand out more by creating a statement wall or even by adding a few pillows that help draw your eye in.

Make your bed

Now that you have worked so hard to give your small master bedroom a makeover make sure you take care of it every day. Keep your flat surfaces cleared and take 2 minutes every morning to make your bed.

One of the things that are so appealing about a hotel bed is that it is fresh and clean every day.

After a long day at work or home, there really is no peace to be found in a messy bed. In fact, it probably only increases your feelings of stress and anxiety.

What have you done to save money while still creating a space that you love?
