10 Reasons to Study Real Estate

Below are ten reasons you should start studying real estate in an academic setting with the Undergraduate or Graduate Real Estate program in the Jindal School of Management at UT Dallas.

  1. Real Estate is vitally important to the United States economy, contributing approximately 18% to the U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Residential real estate provides housing for families. It is the greatest source of wealth and savings for many Americans. Commercial real estate, which includes income producing properties such as apartment buildings, retail shopping centers, office buildings, and manufacturing also creates many jobs. The real estate business and investments provide a source of revenue for millions.
  2. Income-producing properties need professionals to lease, manage and operate these properties. Careers in commercial real estate can include financial analyst, development, investment, lending, property management, asset management, leasing agents, brokers, appraisers, asset managers, marketing, accounting and more.
  3. In 2019, commercial real estate contributed more to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Texas than any other state as reported by the Dallas Business Journal (DBJ). The commercial real estate industry contributed $54.15 billion to Texas’ economy in 2019, according to a new report from industry group NAIOP.
  4. Across the country, commercial real estate created and supported 9.2 million jobs in 2019 and contributed $1.14 trillion to its GDP (reported by DBJ March 2020).
  5. The real estate industry has always been an important part of the Texas economy – and that is still true today. Professionals who can perform financial analysis for real estate investments, assess risk and facilitate financing are in demand.
  6. The real estate world is complex with so many interconnected and moving pieces that it is tough for those without the education to grasp the scope of issues in this profession. The UT Dallas Real Estate concentration is designed to introduce and educate students to industry-specific knowledge and provide them the skills to understand issues of value and market dynamics – information that will help them regardless of their current field of study or ultimate career goal.
  7. Students will develop a thorough understanding of concepts unique to the real estate industry and develop the skills necessary to analyze real estate markets, investments, risk and financing. They will deploy world-class technology tools in market and investment analysis.
  8. An understanding of real estate is important to those choosing careers in finance, banking, law, accounting, marketing, construction, transportation, investments or retail.
  9. Whether you are pursuing a career in real estate or simply looking for an interesting elective, UTD offers real estate courses that are designed to meet your needs and help you understand this dynamic industry.
  10. Real estate courses are available as electives to most students.
