Gurgaon: More than 1200 spots of the city are not safe for women and Golf Course Road is among the most unsafe, finds out a survey conducted by a city based organisation Saftipin.
The overall safety score of Gurgaon is 1.8 out of 5. The Old Gurgaon area is found to be more unsafe than the new Gurgaon.
Kalpana Vishwanath of Saftipin said the data studies the infrastructure and social usages of space in the city and how it impacts the safety of citizens.

She said area like sector 10, sector 23, sector 29, and DLF Phase III are among most unsafe areas of the city.
The motive behind this survey was to inform people about the safe and unsafe locations so they can choose their residence and other activities according. “Before going to a restaurant and book a hotel people can check the safety score,” said Vishwanath adding that it will be of great help to people, who are new in the city.

She said the safety score was given to the area on the basis of lighting, presence of people and activities on the road like shops and movement of people. Isolated and dark road are not safe.
Elaborating further she said they survey the area on nine parameters including light, visibility, security and public transport and areas has scored poor on most of the parameters.
Deputy commissioner and municipal commissioner TL Satyaprakash said they have received a report from NGO about safety audit of the city and they have identified some of the areas which are not safe for women. “Organisation has also given suggestion for improving safety features at this location,” said Satyaprakash adding that they are working on improving illumination on these stretch.

Vinita Singh from NGO ‘We The People’, she works for women safety, said there are three basic things – streetlight, pavements for walking and police patrolling at right time – makes an area safe. “While talking to people during their work they found out that by taking care of these three things can improve safety of the area,” said Singh.
“Gurgaon has perception of being one of the most unsafe cities in the country and the finding has only reinforced the fact. I hope the government will take serious note of it and will make effort to make city safe for women,” Rachna Pant, a software engineer.
Prema Singh, an automobile engineer, said most of the city streets are dark in night and there is no proper public transport facility as these makes life difficult for women. “We never feel safe on street, authorities should take steps to make city more safe for us,” said Singh.
